"Friendly reminder that the writers knew the whole fucking time what they were going to do and yet still made Barney and Robin the quintessential relationship of the show. They let us fall in love with their relationship, let us laugh with them, cry with them, root for them, until they finally lulled us into this fals sense of security. Dedicating a season to their wedding, having Robin come to terms with finally letting herself be happy, being able to believe in a soulmate and say I love you. Barney develop so much, be willing to move the earth for her, want to love and adore and cherish her, because she is his true love. They gave us those lines, those scenes, those kisses, and that WEDDING. Knowing thy were going to wipe it all away.
Don’t tel me that isn’t selfish, manipulative and cruel writing. It’s like they just did it to fuck with us. Pushing Barney and Robin in promotional stuff, coupling them together, having Neil and Cobie answer couples questions about their characters, talking about how much they love their relationship. And they knew this was their plan. It’s nasty, it’s unfair. To fans, its betrayal.
Of course I’m glad for all the beautiful, glorious moments of swarkles we have had. But frankly, as a writer, I can’t believe they had the audacity to give us them, and give us such hope and security with our ship, ALWAYS having the plan to drop a bomb on them. That’s what that garbage excuse for an episode was: a bombshell. It wasn’t a breakup, it was a bomb devastating everything we have known, ruining very piece of character development.
I’m SO glad I got the moments of swarkles that we did, but objectively, we all know that they should have broken them up after season five and never revisited, knowing what they were planning. As writers, resurrecting swarkles only to inevitably tear them apart was horrific. They could have had their relationship arc, a brilliant one, and left it at that- untainted. But what they have done is not only killed their romantic relationship but killed their friendship. We could have shipped them on a brotp level and at least have enjoyed their friendship continuing. However, in the end, they weren’t even friends. They became strangers. I don’t think she ever even met the baby that basically acted as proof that his relationship with Robin meant nothing, and she wasn’t his soulmate, and she wasn’t the person he loves the most in his life, and she wasn’t enough to make him become the better person. I’m so angry about that baby. It’s so sick that an unnamed uterus provided him with his true redemption, which of course, she could never give him. It was such unfair writing, ultimately undermining their whole relationship, whole friendship. They made out like they never even cared about each other in the end; hell, Robin seemed more concerned about Ted than the person she MARRIED. It was like watching two total strangers because I didn’t recognise those characters.
If the writers really were going for this T/R endgame, and always always knew it, they shouldn’t have supportehid Barney and Robin RIGHT UP UNTIL TH FINAL EPISODE, THE EPISODE AFTER THEIR WEDDING, THE EPISODE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR BLISS. If they were going to do this Ted Robin thing, they should have done it right. Seasons of getting them back to the stage where they could be together. Seasons of Barney and Robin being friends, because I refuse to believe that the love they shared was so inconsequential. What they shouldn’t have done was this. Lying and manipulating and everything that they seem to critisise Barney for. And yeah, I’m talking about Barney seasons 1-9.22. Because he was better than all of them in the end.
If they were going to have it be like this, Robin should’ve just been the goddamn mother. Twisting our hearts and our viewership like this, making the mother nothing but a plot device, a vessel, a womb to pop put the perfect babies Ted has always wanted before he gets the perfect woman he always wanted. They shouldn’t have created characters with so much potential to throw them away, reduce them to consolation prizes and love interests. Let’s face it, if they were going to throw away such beautiful relationships, characters and stories for this, they shouldn’t have been trusted with a nine year TV show and the fans that come with it.
